So....how does one actually run a server?

I have this guy who wants to rent out a linux server and I want to open a TF2 server of my own but I don't know anything really about this.

Do I need to own the whole server or can I get by on just a slice of the server (webhosting etc)

Webhosting is something different then gamehosting.
Webhosting is just for making websites and forums like the one you are on right now.
Gamehosting is where you rent 1 server for a small price.

Owning a whole server is only usefull when you gonna host more then 1 game on your server.
